IF I FALL APART won “honorable mention” in the 2014 San Francisco Book Festival’s Biography/Autobiography category. Many thanks to all who helped to take my story from a Word document to a published book!

I enjoyed being one of the speakers at the US Army Corp of Engineers Women’s History Month Celebration. The theme was “Celebrating Women of Character, Courage and Commitment.” The other speakers were Pastor Norma DeSaegher of Waipahu United Church of Christ and Honolulu Police Officer Teisa Eteuati. Their personal stories about overcoming adversity and following their hearts were so inspiring! Thanks to my brother, Phillip Mun, for inviting me.

IF I FALL APART was mentioned in the January/February 2014 issue of Hawaiian Electric Company’s employee newsletter CURRENTS.
“Sharing Her Story to Help Others”
After beating breast cancer, Hawaiian Electric’s Karen Garcia continues her fight against the disease.
“The primary reason I decided to write a book was to share my story with the hope that it will help others dealing with cancer,” said Karen. “During my treatment and recovery process, I was surrounded by family and friends who went through the entire ordeal along with me. Their support helped me to maintain a good attitude, which my doctor said is essential to recovery. I wanted to find a way to give back somehow and to help others. Six years later, I realized that writing a memoir about my journey with cancer was the answer. It took that long before I could allow myself to relive the experience.”
Karen generously donates a portion of the proceeds from her book, If I Fall Apart: A Memoir of Breast Cancer and Bilateral Mastectomy, to cancer charities.

A short article featuring the author of IF I FALL APART appeared in Shidler Business magazine’s Winter 2014 issue. The magazine features the accomplishments and milestones of the University of Hawaii Shidler College of Business’ alumni. Karen is a 2011 graduate of the school’s executive MBA program.
IF I FALL APART is now available at the Women’s Health Center at The Queen’s Medical Center. This venue is especially important to me since the tests that confirmed that I had breast cancer were performed here. Additionally, I also received physical therapy and healing touch sessions at WHC. Bitter sweet memories!

A portion of the proceeds of each copy of IF I FALL APART is donated to fighting cancer. Whiteginger Press LLC donated $200 to the American Cancer Society for their Hope Lodge Hawaii capital campaign. The Lodge will be a centrally located home-away-from-home for cancer patients who live in rural areas but must receive lifesaving treatments in Honolulu. To date, the capital campaign has reached 77% of their goal. I hope this donation will help to make a difference for other cancer survivors!
